Dr Lifen Zhang is The Associate Editor at Financial Times and Editor-in-Chief for FTChinese.com (FT's Chinese language website). He is also Founding Editor for FTRui (FT's Chinese language lifestyle and wealth management magazine).
Before joining the FT in 2003 to launch FTChinese.com, Lifen worked for 10 years as assistant producer for BBC TV, producer, senior producer, news/current affairs editor and senior journalism-production trainer for BBC World Service.
He has received various journalism awards including China’s National Reportage Prize in 1988 and the BBC Onassis Travel Award in 2001. His first book, Wondering By the End of Century (shi-ji-mo-de-liu-lang, co-authored) was published in 1988.
Born in Shanghai, Lifen received his BA degree in Journalism (1984) at Fudan University, Shanghai, where he had also taught for 4 years upon graduation. He obtained his PhD in Communications (1994) with particular interest in media sociology at University of Leicester, England.
He was visiting scholar/visiting professor in Journalism at the National Chengchi University in Taipei and Hong Kong Baptist University in Hong Kong.
He currently sits on the International Advisory Committee for the Department of Journalism, Hong Kong Baptist University, and is also member of the Executive Committee for the Great Britain-China Centre (GBCC), based in London.
He was listed among the “50 Most Powerful Persons in China's Economic Life” in 2009 by China's Asia Business Leaders magazine.
